Meditation for change: How to break patterns and create a new self
Meditation is not just about relaxation.
I teach how to use meditation for personal growth and as a tool for change. It is a way to break old patterns of thinking and acting, and to create a new version of yourself. A new You, if you like.
A new Self? So who do you want to be?
To answer this question, you need to explore and embrace a different way of thinking, of feeling, and of acting. We are often deeply stuck in our habits. To change, we need to consciously step out of our familiar ways of doing things.
It is by behaving differently that we can become a different version of ourselves. Not because the current version is not ok but because the current version is not making us overly happy.
There is ‘room for improvement’ and we know that it is there because we feel a certain kind of lack. There’s a lingering sense of discontentment, the idea that life has to be more than this. The belief that ‘this is not it’, it can’t be, can it?
There is doubt.
To take and make the time to just think about HOW you would like your life to be different is a big step. A step that most people don’t even dare taking. It’s confronting, it can be (very!) unsettling. And at the same time, it will be so liberating once you know who you want to be. The answers will give you focus, you will have a direction and will start to notice where you are not aligned with what you truly want.
To start the process of becoming who you want to be, there are three essential elements to consider.
1. Where do you place your attention?
Through meditation, you learn how to direct your attention. And where your attention goes, your energy follows. You begin to guide your energy towards what truly feeds you and serves you.
At the same time, you become aware of the thoughts that are not serving you.
The body plays an important role here. When you become more attuned to your body, you start to notice more clearly when you are thinking negatively, when you are surrounded by negative people, or when there is a certain heaviness in the energy around you.
Awareness is key.
So ask yourself; what do I focus on? Where do I place my attention?
Especially when you don’t feel great, when the body is acting up: what gets your attention?
2. What do you really believe?
Meditation creates space to take care of yourself. It allows you to examine, to investigate, and to uncover what is truly happening.
It’s a perfectly safe environment to investigate the fears that are holding you back in living your best life.
From a place of self-protection, ‘something’ is holding you back. If not, you wouldn’t be reading this blog.
In the kindest way, we explore the deeply ingrained beliefs that are limiting you.
We can zoom into hard questions like: Do I feel worthy of health, of wealth, of love, of success?
From here, the work becomes very practical. You will start to understand what habits you need to stop. You will become so aware of the words that you are using, that subtly confirm that you do not believe in your own success?
Your language often reveals your beliefs. And your beliefs shape your reality.
3. Visualisation
The third element is practice.
We practice by visualising. By returning to moments where we have already felt good, strong, aligned. The body and the brain do not distinguish clearly between what is real and what is vividly imagined. This is something we can consciously use.
You learn to feel what it is to be healthy, wealthy, loved, worthy, successful, even before there is visible proof.
These are not foreign states. You already know these feelings. You can step into them.
This is how we begin to move towards the life we want to live. Life is here for you. You can shape it. And by reading this, you are already in that process.
Meditation for Personal Growth
If this speaks to you, there is the Puglia retreat from September 14th to September 20th, where we go deeply into this work. It is a full immersion. A real retreat. There are two days without access to your phone or anything connected to the outside world. No digital watches, no distractions.
There are four meditation sessions per day. We do not just talk about this work, we practice it. You have the time and the space to go deep, to examine, to investigate, and to stay with what is holding you back so that it can be transformed.
If you are looking for a softer introduction, a way to gain clarity while also resting and recharging, the Morocco retreat is a beautiful option. We go there in mid October, a perfect time in terms of light, warmth, and atmosphere.
There is also a Christmas retreat in Morocco, for those who want to step out of the usual intensity of that period and enter a different rhythm.
And if you prefer to begin from home, there is the 30 day meditation challenge. We started one in May. You can find more information on the website. The link is right here.
