Christmas is supposed to be wonderful, isn’t it?
Yet every year, there are people who look at the festive season approaching and think: what if I did something completely different this year?
Perhaps your children are spending Christmas with their other parent. Perhaps you are single, live far away from family, or simply don’t feel particularly enthusiastic about another Christmas filled with shopping, cooking and obligations.
Or perhaps you just fancy a holiday.
And why shouldn’t you?
Spending Christmas in Morocco
Having lived in Morocco for four years and organised more than 100 international retreats, I have developed a particular fondness for spending Christmas in Marrakech.
December brings beautiful winter light, sunny afternoons, wonderfully colourful markets and the spectacular Atlas Mountains in the distance.
You can enjoy breakfast outdoors, practise yoga overlooking the mountains, explore Marrakech and spend an afternoon reading by the pool.
Evenings are cooler, of course. It is December, after all. But there is something rather lovely about enjoying the Moroccan sunshine while much of Europe is wrapped up in winter coats.
Coming alone? You’ll be in good company.
One of the questions I regularly receive is whether people can join a retreat on their own.
Absolutely.
My retreats attract people from all over the world, many of whom travel alone. Some have practised yoga for years, others are complete beginners. Some are looking for a quiet week, while others are excited about meeting new people and discovering Morocco.
Everyone arrives with their own story.
What I particularly love is watching a group of people who have never met before gradually become comfortable around each other. Conversations happen over breakfast, during excursions, on the yoga deck and around the dinner table.
There is room for company, laughter and meaningful conversations, as well as plenty of time to enjoy your own space.
And you can have your own private room with your private bathroom, and terrace.
Everything is arranged
A good retreat should allow you to relax from the moment you arrive.
For your Christmas Yoga Retreat in Morocco, we arrange your airport transfers, accommodation, meals, daily yoga and meditation, excursions, a traditional hammam and a massage.
We visit Marrakech with a local guide and spend a day exploring the Atlas Mountains, including a lovely lunch with spectacular views.
The rest of the week has a gentle rhythm. There is yoga, meditation, wonderful food and time to simply enjoy being somewhere beautiful.
You can participate in the activities at your own pace.
If you fancy an afternoon with a book instead of another activity, that sounds like a perfectly good holiday to me.
Do you need to be good at yoga?
Certainly not.
I welcome complete beginners as well as experienced practitioners, and I adapt the classes to the people joining us.
We practise different styles of yoga, including gentle Hatha and Yin Yoga, alongside meditation and breathing exercises.
Some guests come because they love yoga. Others are primarily looking for a relaxing holiday with healthy food, beautiful surroundings and an interesting group of people.
Both are equally welcome.
Christmas can be whatever you want it to be
There is something quite liberating about spending Christmas somewhere completely different.
You can leave the familiar routines behind for a week, experience another culture, enjoy the company of people from around the world and return home with some wonderful memories.
Perhaps you’ll even decide that spending Christmas abroad should become a regular tradition.
I certainly understand the appeal.
